However, for my use, I may need to occasionally send someone the documentation in a format they can just open.

There may be some html 2 pdf options that would mostly work but any cool JS or HTML specific awesomesause would be lost. I thought, well I could just zip up the files. But if you open the main index. But as you click on the links they're built with the assumption that the browser will pull the index. So you can click on the index. So, what I would like maybe it exists? If somehow it could all get shoved into a single file that would be really neat : But, just having an option so that all links point to the actual.

Though, having the ability to build the whole thing to a single file somehow would still be pretty handy. In terms of portability, I think the only viable idea is to add support for Dash I'm not interested in creating a PDF export or functionality to bundle the documentation into one or less files. When we eventually have a plugin API, it should be possible to do it with that, but it will be a while until we are at that stage. I certainly see the value in something like this, for some people, but it's just a case of my limited bandwidth.

Having said that, if there is an easy way to do something like this. I would be interested to hear about them, but as it stands, I can only think of complicated solutions. The only thing I've come up with so far is the MHT file format. If all of that did work, it would be nice to have an option so. So the file would always just be there. Maybe, though. I think a good model for this sort of thing is to look at what Python does.GitHub is home to over 40 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together.

I tried wkhtmltopdf and plenty of somethings like it weasyprint, htmldoc, Calibre's ebook-convert. I found all of them less than satisfactory:. Since that still holds true I chose an alternative route and hacked up a bunch of precprocessors to convert mkdocs flavored Markdown to one long document that is digestible by pandoc - which can do PDF conversion just fine.

These preprocessors are a bit messy right now some are Python, some are Ruby and others still are sed invocations in a Makefile. I can convert all that stuff into Python classes and a few extra command line options and submit the whole thing as a pull request. Would you be interested in that?

While I understand there is desire for something like this, I don't share it. If it is minor I could be tempted. However, I am not totally convinced for a number of reasons so I don't want you to invest a ton of time into it. This is probably something that can be done as a plugin when that becomes a realistic option However, I am aware that doesn't help now. An alternative would be to put this code into a package that people run after a mkdocs build and then they can use it that way.

It is definitely not minor. While I would not have to change much in mkdocs itself only add a --pandoc option or something like that to the command line toolI would have to add a whole lot of mostly independent code, though. If that works for you I'm happy to submit a pull request, but if it's too much entirely understandable I'd be fine with turning it into a separate package. Let's go for a separate package for now, it is much easier to later pull things into MkDocs than it is to remove them : Please keep us posted on this issue with how you get on, I would like to see how it works.

I've been wondering about this for some time myself, so awesome work jgrassler much appreciated.
